Background
On May 7, 1990, President George H.W. Bush issued “Presidential Proclamation 6130”, designating May 1990 as the first “Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month.” On May 14, 1991, Pub.L.102-42, the law that requested the President to proclaim May 1991 and May 1992 as “Asian/Pacific American Heritage Months”, was passed unanimously by Congress and signed by the President. This law also recognized the significance of May 7th and May 10th in the history of Asian/Pacific Americans.1 On October 23, 1992, Congress passed Pub.L.102-450 which permanently designated May of each year as “Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month.” Pursuant to Pub. L. 102-450 Presidents Clinton, George W. Bush, Obama, and Trump have annually issued proclamations designating May as Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month.
In observance of this special occasion, Asian American Chamber of Commerce of Greater Philadelphia (AACCGP) is collaborating with Widener University Small Business Development Center and hosting a business resource forum with stakeholders and entrepreneurs that have been working together to create opportunities that help the communities thrive. The forum hopes to provide an opportunity for micro and small business owners to engage in dialogue on important topics impacting their businesses today, to meet and network virtually with experts working to achieve sustainable development goals and to share information and gain insights.
The discussions will reflect on how businesses and families are mitigating the issues posed by COVID-19, inflation, supply chain shortage and the process of healing in the midst of all these challenges while combating “Asian hate” in Philadelphia area. The speakers will present some of the best practices and tactics for businesses of all sizes to help prepare for the future business environment. The audience can also expect to learn about programs and resources that the City of Philadelphia is offering for immigrant families and minority-owned businesses.
