The Asian American Chamber of Commerce of Greater Philadelphia and Japan America Society of Greater Philadelphia are proud to co-host 2023 AAPI Heritage Month Celebration at the beautiful Shofuso Japanese House and Garden,Shofuso, also known as Japanese House and Garden, is a traditional 17th century-style Japanese house and garden located in Philadelphia's West Fairmount Park on the site of the Centennial Exposition of 1876. Shofuso was built in 1953 as a gift from Japan to American citizens, to symbolize post-war peace and friendship between the two countries.

Attendees will be able to enjoy the traditional Japanese architecture at the Shofuso House, modeled after the guest house of Kojo-in, a sub-temple of Mii-dera in the city of Ōtsu, built in 1601 and, the Shofuso garden designed by Tansai Sano, a landscape architect in Kyoto whose family had been caretakers of the famous dry garden in Ryoan-ji temple for six generations.

Japanese sushi and sake will be served. No shoes allowed inside the Shofuso house. Disposable socks will be provided at the entrance.

Exclusive Performance

Daniel Matsukawa (principal bassoon, The Philadelphia Orchestra) and Isabella Egawa (Violin, Juilliard MM '24) will take you on a captivating musical journey with their performance of two quintessential Japanese songs: Tōryanse and The Moon over the Ruined Castle. Their melodies will transport you to Japan, and together with the serene surroundings of Shofuso.

Proceeds from this event will be donated entirely to Shofuso, to restore paintings and mural that are worth millions_ destroyed during vandalism last July.
